HARRISBURG – As a free service to the community, Rep. Bob Brooks (R-Westmoreland/Allegheny) will host two shredding events in the coming weeks to give residents of the 54th Legislative District a chance to safeguard themselves against identity theft by having their personal documents securely destroyed.

The first event will be held on Saturday, June 1, from 9-11 a.m., at the empty lot adjacent to Franklin Plaza, Goodwill Industries and UPMC, 4600 William Penn Highway in Murrysville. The second event will be held on Saturday, June 29, from 9-11 a.m., at the Lower Burrell VFW, 1601 Wildlife Lodge Road in Lower Burrell.

“These shredding events are a great opportunity for residents to securely destroy large amounts of documents containing personal or sensitive information,” said Brooks. “I encourage area residents to take advantage of this service.”

Common types of unwanted items that should be shredded may include credit card statements or applications, bank statements, canceled checks, old income tax information, insurance and medical records, and other materials with identifying personal information like Social Security, credit card or bank account numbers.

Phonebooks, newspapers and bound books cannot be accepted. There is a five-box limit of paperwork to be shredded per household and you are invited to watch as your documents are being shredded. This event is for residents only. No businesses, please.

“I am pleased to be able to provide the community with a secure way to shred large amounts of personal documents and reduce the risk of becoming a victim of identity theft,” Brooks added.
