Brooks to Introduce Legislation to Reopen Indoor Sports and Recreational Activities
5/13/2020
HARRISBURG – Recognizing the restrictions of recent weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to exercise, Rep. Brooks (R-Allegheny/Westmoreland) announced today that he will be introducing legislation that will allow Pennsylvanians to engage in their favorite indoor sports and recreation activities beginning on Monday, June 1.

“Many people exercise by participating in indoor sports and recreation such as fitness, indoor tennis, racquetball, basketball and pickle ball,” said Brooks. “I believe we should engage these activities with an eye toward safety.

Brooks emphasized that mental health is a crucial part of the resilience residents need to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Keeping people’s spirits up is very important and indoor exercise is a strong antidepressant. In addition, stress can be a significant suppressor of immunity, and not being able to get some fresh air and enjoy a small change of scenery can add to a person’s anxiety.

“Gov. Tom Wolf has lifted restrictions on some recreational facilities such as playing golf,” said Brooks. “We should allow indoor recreation to open as well, as long as appropriate health and safety measures are followed.”
